Us Patent No. 426944 Apparatus for Teaching the Art of Boxing by J Lovatt (189) — a contraption of pulleys, pivots, and a suspended striking head, drawn in 1890 when boxing was still shedding its bare-knuckle reputation and the Marquess of Queensberry rules were teaching gentlemen to spar. Lovatt's schematic answers a peculiar question of the age: how to rehearse a punch when your opponent isn't there to throw one back.
