Us Patent No. 249743 Device for Holding Horses Tails by W B Butchers November 22 1881 — Butcher's inventor's diagram belongs to the era of the trotting track and the harness race, when a horse's tail, left to its own devices, could foul the reins mid-stride. The schematic shows a tidy clamping apparatus meant to gather and hold that tail aloft, a small mechanical courtesy from the age of the sulky.
