International Naval Rendezvous at Hampton Roads 1893 - Vintage Maritime Print — a chromolithograph tableau of the Columbian Naval Review, where the ironclads of a dozen nations rode at anchor off Old Point Comfort in salute to the New World's four hundredth year. The print catches that Gilded Age peculiarity: warships dressed in signal flags like debutantes, their black hulls softened by the haze of a Virginia spring.
About the Source
Bella Frye sources maritime illustrations from American archives and 19th-century lithographic publishers — Currier & Ives, the Endicott firm, Sarony & Major, and the period broadsides that documented American sea power, shipwrecks, yacht races, and naval engagements as they happened. The aged paper tone and the hand-pulled chromolithographic color are preserved in the print.
